Reading Reflection No. 3

27A – Reading Reflection No. 3

The wright brothers were the first to create functioning flying machine. I didn’t know much about the brother before I started this book. I only knew they were the first. I like their admiration for flight. They were very close brothers who acted more like twins. Wilbur, being the oldest, made sure he looked after his family. Wilbur’s love for flight grew into a reality when he and Orville decided to build their first flying machine and practice flying it in North Carolina.

Both brothers were very dedicated to the pursuit of flight. I admire that even though they didn’t have a college education, they didn’t let that stop them. The brothers faced a lot of adversity and failure during their career. The first flying machine was destroyed after trying to fly it, but they didn’t stop. Many people did not encourage them because few thought flight was necessary.

I would like to ask the Wright brothers why they continued to through so much adversity. The press rarely if ever came to their test flights and the community didn’t have much faith in them either. I would also like to ask the brothers why they never started their own family. They were very dedicated to their family, but never started their own.

Wilbur and Orvillle both didn’t mind hard work. They were able to figure out the first flying machine. They always preserved against the negative comments and kept their minds set on the main goal, which was flight.

  1. Hi Sarah,
I had seriously considered reading this book because it sounded so interesting, but I ended up choosing another one instead. Pretty much everyone knows who the Wright Brothers are, but they don’t know the back story. Next time you’re in Washington D.C. go to the Smithsonian because they have a wonderful exhibit about the Wright Brothers and their early history of flying.

  2. Sarah,

I obviously know who the Wright brothers are, but have never read anything about them and do not know the whole story about how they achieved flight. From your post, it seems like they were very dedicated to their work. It is really interesting that neither of them started a family. I do not know how old they were when they finally got off the ground, but maybe they were past the age of starting a family by that point so their work stopped them from that.

  3. Sarah,

I was intrigued to read your post because the development of flight has always been an interesting topic to me. I love that you highlighted the wright brothers achievements although they didn't receive a college degree. This shows the importance of natural innovation. The questions you would like to ask them are great. I love to hear about perseverance, especially from the perspective of individuals who are successful.
